With this session we learnt a lot about various kinds of materials and their applications. We also went deep into each category of material and studied their use, about their examples.
BIOMATERIAL – products of biological processes. Eg:- enzymes used in washing powder, silk, jute, cellulose, etc.,
It was interesting to know that the most important material in an individual’s life is “PAPER”, because it tells what you are :-
- It tells you are not a thief (bill)
- tells what countries you’ve been to (passport)
- permits/denies for a holiday (gate pass)
- every little thing comes in paper. Eg :- Soap.
- Paper protects everything.
- You want to buy something? not possible without a paper (money)
Examples of Synthetic elastomers :

- Neoprene
- Ethylene Vinyl Acetate
Examples of Plastic :
- ABS (chair)
- Polyethylene
- PET
- PMMA
- PC (similar to PMMA, but heavier and cheaper)
- Polypropylene
-> Assignment 1 – Design a coaster of 4*4 inch using Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF board).
Assignment 2 – Sketch the hand grips of 3 objects with 6 different angles
These assignments taught me a lot about handling the machinery and usage of different machines.
