SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS 1 – 09/01/2020 – SAHIBA MA’AM

United Nations – this is a body that unites the entire world.

This class was all about how UN solves problems of the various nations, through sustainability.

Sustainability - Meeting your own needs, without limiting them to your own self. In other words, sustainability is meeting the needs of present generation, without compromising the needs of future generations.
Sustainable system - is a body that has its own set of principles to achieve the goal of sustainability.

GLOBAL GOALS OF SUSTAINABILITY

  1. No Poverty :- every citizen deserves the basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, etc.
  2. No Hunger :- every citizen needs food.
  3. Good Health :- includes nutrients and vaccination.
  4. Quality Education :- literacy, application to real world, affordable schools.
  5. Gender Equality :- respect, higher posts, independence.
  6. Clean Water and Sanitation :- this not just includes the drinking water, but also keeping the surroundings clean. You cannot get clean drinking water, if the place you are living in is not maintained clean.
  7. Renewable Energy :- electricity, water
  8. Good Jobs and Economic Growth :- Employment
  9. Innovation and Infrastructure :- not just the personal development, but development as a whole is also important.
  10. Reduced inequalities :- rich and poor.
  11. Sustainable cities and communities :- present generation must be careful.
  12. Responsible Consumption :- very important for sustainability.
  13. Climate Action :- what you give to the climate, will come back to you.
  14. Life below water :- water pollution must be controlled.
  15. Life on land :- deforestation must stop.
  16. Peace and Justice :- being united leads to peace and justice.
  17. Partnerships for the goals :- not only peace and justice, unity also helps to achieve goals.

These goals not only think of the personal development, but also plans for the development of individual nations. We can see that most of the above goals are interlinked. Eg:- No poverty -> No hunger -> Good health, Climate action -> life below water -> life on land, Gender equality -> reduced inequalities.

PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY –

  1. People
  2. Planet
  3. Profit

A balance of these three factors is very important and mandatory for sustainability.

CRADLE TO CRADLE

Cradle to Cradle is a cycle that is repeated all the time.

Initially, a product is produced, it is used, and then thrown which is then converted to nutrients. Eventually, these nutrients are used to produce the same product again. The process goes on.

At the end of the class, we were all given a few examples of few bodies that are working on sustainability. One of them was the plan of Auroville, in which government is to develop 50 solar cities. There are also many other bodies working on managing plastics, Mid day meals for children, etc.

-> Assignment – Think of few examples that are sustainable and not sustainable based on your daily life, and make a Presentation based on it.
