ASSIGNMENT 3 – DEVANSHI MA’AM

The most important thing I learnt while my research was that anything and everything has a theory about how and why was it made. Every object, has a very interesting evolution of itself. Even a smallest object can teach you a theory that’s interesting and surprising as well.

When I was about to start my research on my chosen object – Handbag, I thought it might be quite easy for me to complete this assignment. I thought there just might be various patterns and shapes and types of bags that evolved during the many years, right from Mesopotamia till Ancient Rome. But, when I started my research, surprisingly, I found that there is much and much to this topic.

In the ancient civilisations like Mesopotamia and Egypt, Handbags did not exist as an object but as a symbol. The Handbags were carved in every sculpture of deity, and surprisingly in every religion, all across the world. Ancient Egyptians had a Symbology for these bags – They were a unit of measurement back then, be it a measurement of weight, height, depth, etc. There were also different sculptures that were classified based in these symbols.

It was in 13th century when the bags started coming into the markets an actual object. Handbags evolved from being an undergarment for women to a big bag to carry everything they could. There were various materials like leather, fabric like cotton, etc. to design the bags.

I did my research on different websites of each civilisation. I tried to follow an order of civilisation. as follows:

Mesopotamia
Ancient Egypt
Indus Valley Civilisation
Ancient China
Ancient America
Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome
